Troubleshoot slow performance issues in Sage 50 Accounts

Check existing known issues

Search the Help Centre using the exact error message or the name of the software section where the issue appears.

Still need help? Follow the steps below.

Verify Demonstration data

To check if the issue is software-related, try using the Demonstration data:

  • No issues in Demonstration data: Move on to the Check existing known issues section.
  • The same issue appears in the Demonstration data: Uninstall and reinstall Sage 50 Accounts.

Check the volume of data

Sage 50 Accounts has no set limit on records or transactions. System performance depends on disk space, memory, data size, network speed, and the number of users logged in.

To keep things running smoothly, we recommend:

  • Keep data under 250,000 transactions, spread across different areas. Avoid assigning a large number of transactions to a single customer or account.
  • Fewer than 50,000 invoices
  • Fewer than 50,000 sales orders
  • Fewer than 50,000 purchase orders
  • Fewer than 5,000 customer records
  • Fewer than 5,000 supplier records
  • Fewer than 20,000 product records
  • Fewer than 2,000 project records

To check your record count, go to Help and click About. You’ll see the number of records listed in the Data Information section. If you’ve gone over the recommended limits, reduce your data. Delete old invoices and use Clear Audit Trail to remove older transactions.

Check that each computer meets the recommended system requirements and has the latest build of the software installed

  • Refer to your version’s system requirements for further information.
  • Additionally, confirm that you are running the most recent version of Sage 50 Accounts.

If all computers meet the system requirements, have the latest build, and the issue is still happening, click Next to continue.

If issue Exist in All Areas:

  3. Go to File > Maintenance. Click Yes if prompted to close other windows.
  4. Click Reindex, select the affected modules, then click OK and Yes.
  5. Click Compress Now, then click Compress.
  6. Click OK, then Close, and Close again to exit.

To access the data if Sage 50 Accounts is set up on a network, use a UNC route.

Repeat these steps on every computer using Sage 50 Accounts

If you access server data using a mapped network drive, switch to a UNC path instead. To find your current data path, go to Help > About and note the Data Directory.

  1. Go to the Company file location:
VersionCompany file location
v31C:\ProgramData\Sage\Accounts\2025
v30C:\ProgramData\Sage\Accounts\2024
v29C:\ProgramData\Sage\Accounts\2023
v28C:\ProgramData\Sage\Accounts\2022
v27C:\ProgramData\Sage\Accounts\2021
v26C:\ProgramData\Sage\Accounts\2020
  1. Select “Open with Notepad” after double-clicking the Company file.
  2. Update the paths to the new server location using the correct UNC path.
    • Example: If your server is named Server and the shared folder is Sagedata, use \\Server\Sagedata.
  3. Click File > Save, then click File > Exit.

Check your data

Use the Check Data option to make sure data issues aren’t slowing things down.

  1. Open Sage Accounts and log in to the affected company.
  2. Click File > Maintenance > Check Data.

Fix any errors found before moving on. For help, refer to the A–Z index of errors, warnings, and comments guide.

Using multiple companies in Sage 50 Accounts? Run Check Data for each one separately.

Check for .s50 files in Accdata

Too many .s50 files in the Accdata folder can slow down performance. You can safely remove these temporary files.

Here’s how:

  1. Open your company data in Sage 50 Accounts.
  2. Click Help > About, then find and open the Data Directory.
  3. In the Accdata folder, delete all files with the .s50 extension.

File locking

Do you have a dedicated server or computer on your network that stores your Sage 50 Accounts data centrally?

Check for file locking

Leaving files open too long on your server can slow down Sage 50 Accounts.

Note: Ask your IT support for help with these steps if needed.

To check for open files:

  1. In the Windows search bar, type Computer Management and open it.
  2. In the left panel, expand Shared Folders and click Open Files.
This shows all files currently open on your server, including Sage 50 Accounts data files.

The system will automatically close these files over time, depending on your setup and other software.

Antivirus software and scheduled tasks

Update your antivirus settings to ensure they work smoothly with Sage Accounts and avoid any conflicts.

Note: Talk to your local IT support before making changes to antivirus settings or scheduled tasks.

If the issue happens at certain times of the day or week, review and adjust your scheduled tasks:

  • In the Windows search bar, type Task Scheduler and open it.

Sage user-specific issues

Try logging in as a different Sage user to check if the performance issue is user-specific.

  1. Click File > Log Off.
  2. Log in with a different user account.
  3. Repeat the steps that caused the performance issue.

Using the Manager login? Use a regular user account to test the problem once more.

Tip: To create a new user, go to Settings > User Management > Users, then click New.

Windows user-specific issues

Try using a different Windows user account to see if the performance issue still occurs.

Does the problem happen with another Windows login?

Note: If you only have one Windows user account, select Yes to continue.

Test the network transfer speed outside of Sage 50 Accounts

To test this, copy the Reports folder from the client computer to the shared folder on the server. Time how long the copy takes to complete.

The standard location for the Reports folder is:

VersionReports folder location
v31C:\ProgramData\Sage\Accounts\2025\Company.000
v30C:\ProgramData\Sage\Accounts\2024\Company.000
v29C:\ProgramData\Sage\Accounts\2023\Company.000
v28C:\ProgramData\Sage\Accounts\2022\Company.000
v27C:\ProgramData\Sage\Accounts\2021\Company.000
v26C:\ProgramData\Sage\Accounts\2020\Company.000
  1. On the client PC, open Sage Accounts.
  2. Click Help > About, and in the Program Details section, note the Data Directory.
  3. To access the Reports folder, press Windows + E to launch File Explorer.
  4. Right-click the folder and choose Copy.
  5. Go to the root of the local disk on the server, click Edit, then click Paste.
  6. Keep track of how long it takes to finish the procedure.
  7. Repeat steps 4 and 5 two more times.
  8. Calculate the average time of the 2nd and 3rd transfers (ignore the first, as it may be slower).

Expected transfer times:

  • 30–40 seconds on a 100 Mbps network
  • 15–20 seconds on a 1 Gbps network

Next, repeat the same steps but copy the folder from the server back to the client.

Important:

  • If the transfer takes over 80 seconds on a 100 Mbps network or over 40 seconds on a 1 Gbps network, there may be a network performance issue.
  • Until the network speed increases, Sage will continue to operate slowly.

For further help, speak with your network administrator.

Relocate your data to a new location

  • Move your Sage 50 Accounts data to a different server location to see if the issue continues.
  • Next, launch Sage 50 Accounts and try to recreate the issue.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Why is Sage 50 running slow on my computer?

Sage 50 may run slow due to outdated software, low system memory, active VPN connections, too many temp files, or settings like automatic list refresh. Network or data file issues may also cause delays.

Will disabling “Automatically Refresh Lists” affect my data?

No. This setting only stops the software from updating lists in real-time. It does not change or delete your data.

Yes. Using a VPN can cause slow data access. Turning it off during use can improve speed.

How often should I clear the %temp% folder?

Clear the temp folder once a month or when Sage 50 becomes slow.

What does increasing the memory buffer size do in Connection Manager?

It gives Sage 50 more memory to work with, which can speed up performance, especially for multiple users.

Should I consult an IT professional before making changes?

Yes. Consult your IT support for assistance, particularly with network or server settings, to minimize potential risks.
